side-lying position
Side-lying position
The side-lying position is a breastfeeding technique where both you and your baby lie on your sides, facing each other. To use this position, lie on your side with a pillow under your head and, if needed, another one between your knees. Place your baby on their side, facing you, and make sure their nose is aligned with your nipple to start the latch.
You can use your hand to support your breast and guide your baby to latch on. A rolled-up towel or blanket placed behind your baby can help keep their body close to yours.
This position is especially helpful for nighttime feedings or if youโve had a C-section and find sitting up uncomfortable.
What to watch out for
While the side-lying position can be very comfortable, make sure your baby is latching properly and breathing easily.
- Latch issues: If your baby isnโt latched on correctly, it can cause nipple pain and inefficient milk transfer. Make sure your baby's mouth is wide open and their lips are flanged outward.
- Obstructed breathing: Make sure your baby's nose is clear to breathe easily. If needed, adjust your baby slightly or lift your breast to prevent their nose from being pressed against it.
- Safety: Make sure there are no loose blankets or pillows that could obstruct your baby's breathing. Always supervise your baby during breastfeeding to prevent any accidents.
If you experience persistent nipple pain or your baby has difficulty latching in this position, it might be helpful to consult with a lactation consultant.

Physical limitations or health circumstances
Certain conditions may make the side-lying position challenging:
- Recent surgery: If you've had a C-section or other abdominal surgery, this position can help because it keeps pressure off your incision. However, make sure you are comfortable and supported.
- Back problems: If you have back issues, make sure you have adequate support with pillows to maintain a comfortable position.
