When Breastfeeding Needs Medical Care
Sometimes breastfeeding challenges need more than latch adjustments or feeding support. Recurring mastitis, ongoing breast or nipple pain, and low milk supply can have medical causes that deserve a closer look.
Anna, our founder, is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse-Midwife, and IBCLC. She combines breastfeeding expertise with medical care to evaluate your concerns, identify possible underlying causes, and recommend treatment. When appropriate, she can prescribe medications and order lab tests or imaging.
Think You Might Have Mastitis? Breast redness, warmth, swelling, or painโespecially with fever, chills, or body achesโmay need prompt evaluation. Don’t wait for an online appointment to open up. Call or text (801) 210-1969 so we can help determine whether a same-day visit with Anna is possible, including by video when appropriate.
IBCLC or Anna
Choosing the right supportBreastfeeding help, medical care, or both?
You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong before asking for help. Our IBCLCs focus on feeding and lactation support, while Anna can evaluate and treat medical concerns that may be affecting breastfeeding. Sometimes both types of care are helpful.
Start with an IBCLC
For help with latch, positioning, pumping, bottles, painful feeds, or an initial evaluation of low milk supply. Your IBCLC can assess feeding and recommend a medical visit if there may be an underlying health concern.
Schedule with Anna
For mastitis, breast or nipple pain that isn’t improving, suspected medical causes of low milk supply, medication questions, or help with relactation or induced lactation.
Sometimes you need both
Medical care and hands-on feeding support can work together. Anna’s visit focuses on evaluating and treating medical concerns. If you also need additional help with feeding, she may recommend a separate consultation with an IBCLC.
What Anna treats
Medical lactation servicesWhat can breastfeeding medicine help with?
Mastitis and breast inflammation
A painful, red, or swollen breast, with or without a fever, can be concerning. Anna can evaluate your symptoms, recommend treatment for inflammation, and determine whether an infection or additional testing needs to be addressed. She can also help when mastitis keeps coming back.
Breast or nipple pain that won’t go away
Burning, stabbing, or persistent pain deserves attention, especially when latch adjustments haven’t helped. Anna can evaluate possible causes, including vasospasm, skin conditions, and infections, and recommend treatment based on her findings.
Low milk supply with a possible medical cause
If you’ve already worked on feeding or pumping and your supply is still lower than expected, there may be more to explore. Anna can evaluate medical factors, including hormonal or thyroid concerns, and order lab work when indicated.
Relactation and induced lactation
Whether you’re hoping to rebuild milk supply after a break or induce lactation for adoption or surrogacy, Anna can help develop an individualized plan and discuss medical options when appropriate.
Medications and health conditions
Wondering how a medication, medical condition, or procedure could affect breastfeeding? Anna can review your concerns, discuss potential risks and benefits, and help you explore your options.
Perinatal anxiety and depression
If you’ve been feeling unusually anxious, overwhelmed, down, or unlike yourself during pregnancy or after birth, Anna also offers perinatal mental health care.
How a medical visit works
What to expectTwo ways to meet with Anna
During your consultation, Anna will review your health history, listen to your concerns, and assess what may be contributing to your symptoms. Together, you’ll discuss a personalized treatment plan, including medications, testing, referrals, or follow-up care when needed.
In-office visits
Visit Anna at our office in Lehi, Utah, for a personalized medical assessment. In-office visits are a good choice when a physical examination is needed or you prefer to meet face-to-face.
Virtual visits
Meet with Anna by video from the comfort of home, if you’re located in Utah. Virtual visits can be a convenient option for mastitis concerns, medication questions, and medical lactation follow-ups. Anna can determine whether an in-office examination or additional testing is needed.
Not sure which visit is right for you? Call or text (801) 210-1969 and tell us what’s going on. We’ll help you choose where to start.
Perinatal mental health
Your mental health matters, tooNot feeling like yourself during pregnancy or after birth?
Anxiety and depression can begin during pregnancy or after birth, and you don’t have to navigate those feelings alone. Anna offers evaluations and treatment for perinatal mental health concerns, which may include supportive counseling and medication management when appropriate.
Questions
Questions Before You Book
Do I need a referral to see Anna?
No referral is needed to schedule directly with Anna. If an IBCLC recommended a medical lactation assessment, please mention that when you book.
Should I start with an IBCLC or Anna?
For latch, pumping, bottle-feeding, and most initial milk supply concerns, an IBCLC is a great place to start. For mastitis, persistent breast or nipple pain, possible medical causes of low supply, or relactation and induced lactation, schedule with Anna. If you’re unsure, call or text us and we’ll help you choose.
Does insurance cover medical lactation visits?
We currently accept DMBA for eligible in-office medical lactation visits. Other medical lactation visits are self-pay. Coverage and benefits can vary, so call or text us with questions about your options. Insurance pathways for standard IBCLC consultations may be different from those for medical visits.
Can I see Anna virtually?
Yes. Video appointments are available for self-pay patients located in Utah when telehealth is appropriate for their concern. If an in-office examination or procedure is needed, Anna will discuss the next steps with you.
Will Anna help with latch and feeding, too?
Anna is also an IBCLC, so she understands both the feeding and medical sides of lactation. Her medical visits focus on evaluating and treating medical concerns. If you need more hands-on feeding help, she may recommend a separate IBCLC consultation.
